What You Should Know...

Central air conditioning has always been the convenience people love to hate. The systems have long been known for the alarming amounts of energy they consume and noise generated by the outside units. Fortunately, new AC technology  has relieved us of those concerns.  Improvements to fan blades and compressor technology have quieted the units, a better refrigerant (R410) is cleaner for the environment and a rise in efficiency levels helps with energy consumption.

A number of factors are considered when choosing a HVAC unit for your home. For residential units, you will want 13 SEER or higher. The SEER rating determines the efficiency of your unit (similar to miles/gallon for a car). Another factor in determining a unit is the size. Regardless of the efficiency, the unit needs to be sized correctly which is measured in tons. The general rule of thumb is that it takes 1 ton of air-conditioning to cool 1,000 square feet of a well insulated space.  Choosing the correct size is important because undersizing a system can overwork the condenser, causing it to "ice up" which will shut the unit down. And oversizing the system will cause the house to cool down too quickly and it will end up feeling cold and dewy.

Our trained estimators and installers know how to properly size a system for your home by taking into account the home's insulation factors, layout, air leakage, exposure to sun and typical climate conditions.
